Basics of Distance Learning Online
Campus and Online College Search
The physical tools needed to successfully complete an online degree at an online college are simple. All you a really need is a personal computer (a desktop or laptop, it doesn't matter), a reliable Internet connection, an e-mail account, and the knowledge of how to attach files to your e-mails.
Your personality requirements are a little more complicated.
Before starting an online degree program, you need to know yourself. How do you learn? Are you a self-starter who has no problem convincing yourself to finish a task or do you need encouragement in order to finish something? Both styles of learning can succeed in an online degree program, however, if you know that you will need extra encouragement to finish an assignment, you should look for a college or university with a low student-teacher ratio.
Students enrolled in an online degree program need to have strong time management skills. When students are not in a traditional classroom, they sometimes discover that life tends to interrupt their studies. It is difficult to sit at your computer doing algebraic equations or memorizing old historical facts while also being able to spend time with friends and family. Students who are unable to manage their time wisely find themselves unable to complete an online degree program.
To successfully complete an online degree program, students are required to make some sacrifices. Because online students are typically trying to balance the demands of a family and job along with their educational responsibilities they are often forced to give up some of their simple pleasures, like Saturday night movie dates, weekend trips to visit friends or family, and Friday night pizza parties.
If a student has attempted and failed to obtain a degree at a traditional university, they need to sit back and evaluate the reason why. If they were unable to complete their degree at the traditional university because the distractions of the social scene were too much for them, they will probably find similar distractions while they are living at home studying at an online university. These students will find that they must disconnect themselves from the rest of the world while they are completing their studies.
Students attending an online college or university are responsible for contacting their professors with any questions or issues they might have. Contact of professors and fellow students can often be made via e-mails, discussion boards, or chat rooms. Students interested in online colleges or universities should already possess a working knowledge of the aforementioned items.
Everyone is capable of completing their college degree in an online college or university, all it takes is a strong desire to succeed.
