Handling the loss of a job can be one of the most difficult and emotional trials anyone ever has to face. Since we associate who we are with what we do, it can become very stressful. Even ranking up there with divorce and the loss of a loved one.

The first thing you must come to grips with before you do anything else, is that you have to move on. You're going to have to "get on with it " in order to survive. I'm not trying to make light of the situation, but you're going to have to do something.

Be practical and get things in order.

The first practical thing to look at is how long will your resources last until you find a new job or career.

  • Do you have a nest egg or severance package to fall back on?
  • Do you qualify for unemployment benefits? There's a good chance that you do. Check out your local unemployment office or this site to see if you do. You can also find information and links to individual state sites Here.

Health insurance is a major concern that you'll have to deal with. There are resources available that may be able to help you. Click Here to check out the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA).

    "Getting On With It"

There are a lot of ways you can look at the loss of your job. It's very possible that this could be a blessing in disguise. It will definitely make you feel a lot better if you can look at it this way. You see, only your attitude will determine if this is an opportunity or a curse.

Use this time to explore new skills and options. zcareer.com offers many resources to help you explore these options.

Career Testing is one way that you can discover new horizons and avenues. Career testing can open your eyes to new possibilities by matching your talents and motivations to different work areas. This can actually increase your chances of getting a job by giving you more options to apply for.

You may also want to check out the resources for career planning, job search, or computer careers .

    In A Nutshell

Keep your attitude and emotions together, take care of the important stuff, and get on with your life.

Who knows what great things are waiting around the corner for you.
