Just as anything else, a successful career in landscaping requires a passion for the field. Landscape contractors generally have a long history and interest of gardening at their own homes and for friends and family. However, not having a history shouldn't discourage you from going after this career if you're interested in it. It can be learned.

Besides having a passion and interest for landscaping, many successful contractors have a good knowledge of plants, shapes, art, colors, business, and people skills. However, many times they're simply more interested in running a business and people than they are in designing.

While they can be two in the same, contractors are not always landscape designers. As with home builders, landscape contractors sometimes simply bid, set up, and execute projects. Designers, on the other hand, are the ones that pursue knowledge in plants, geometry, art, and architecture.

Most schools of design that teach careers in landscaping will require you to take both business and design oriented classes. Business aspects and running a business can sometimes take away from the enjoyment of career like landscape designing but they're still good qualities to have.

One last thing to keep in mind is that many States don't require any type of degree to be a landscape designer. So it may be possible to go after this career without any type of schooling at all. But you better be passionate and good at it if you're going to succeed.
