Graduated College Ready to Start New Career
Campus and Online College Search
CONGRATULATIONS!!
You finally made it. All of your hard work, late nights, cramming and crunch time has earned you success!
Now the fun begins. You get to put that new knowledge to work for you. To start building your dreams or to continue the path you have already chosen. Either way, your life will never be the same and the next new phase begins. The first decision to make is what you want to do with your degree and knowledge.
You can try internships to see exactly which part of your study field suits you best. For instance if you studied Criminal Justice, there are many aspects to that field that may entice you, but to be able to "try them on" would ensure you haven't chosen the wrong aspect of the field to go into. Business degrees also offer a wide range of opportunities and many firms around the country and world offer summer internships for college students. If you haven't graduated college yet, this is good to do during your summer breaks. Not only do you get experience in a job that relates to your chosen field, but can put you in contact with many people in that same field for future reference.
Secondly you can head straight into the work world right after graduation. Hopefully you've already lined up some contacts and decided the direction you want to take. Use the resume services offered here to help you put your resume together and start pounding the pavement. There is also a link for job searches that is very helpful.
If you are not sure, take some of the assessment tests to see which area you fall into on your career path. You may think you are not management material, but after a honest assessment, you find out you have more of those abilities and traits now that you've completed your degree. You will see the difference and the noticable knowledge you have gained. It's quite exciting and encouraging.
You may want to continue working the current job you have, if you are currently employed, and take your time to find the right position for you before jumping ship for the first thing that comes along. Generally, this is good for the person who has gone to college later in life and has built a career already. You have the luxury of taking your time to find the best opportunity for your circumstance. For these people it is important to keep in mind your future medical and retirement options with your current company. You may be better off financially to wait a year or two to get full or partial retirement benefits and then move on to a new career. This will also allow you more time to search the job market to put your existing work experience in addition to your degree to work for you. Check out your options with your current employee benefits so that you can optimize your hard work and dedication before you leave the company. You don't want to rob yourself there.
There is a ZCareer blog available to talk about ideas and alternatives that may help you make the best choice for you. You have made one of the best decisions already by getting that degree. You are smart to look around for options, there are a lot out there. You will find what is right for you.
~Look to the future; that's where you'll be spending the rest of your life.~
